Can you visit the Alsace Christmas markets without a car?

The markets the train serves directly

Five markets are reached with no onward transport at all, the station being within walking distance of the chalets:

• Strasbourg: central station, ten minutes on foot from Place Kleber, with all regional and international connections.
• Colmar: station a quarter of an hour on foot from Place de l'Ancienne Douane, with a direct and frequent link from Strasbourg.
• Sélestat: midway between Strasbourg and Colmar, a mid-sized market, station in the town centre.
• Obernai: served from Strasbourg, market open until 31 December.
• Mulhouse: station in the town centre, home of the Christmas fabric market.

The Christmas shuttles, from Colmar station

This is the service that changes everything and remains poorly known. A seasonal network, separate from the regular coach lines, links Colmar station to the vineyard villages from 27 November to 20 December 2026. Five lines:

• Lines 1 and 2: Colmar, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé, Friday to Sunday.
• Line 3: Colmar and Eguisheim, every day.
• Line 4: Colmar, Turckheim and Munster, Friday to Sunday.
• Line 5: Colmar and Neuf-Brisach, on 12 and 13 December only.
• The ticket is valid all day with unlimited hop-on hop-off: 17 euros Friday to Sunday, 8 euros Monday to Thursday on line 3, free for under-12s with a reservation. Online booking opens on 12 November 2026.

Not to be confused with park-and-ride shuttles

Two services carry the same name, and mixing them up means missing the only one that helps without a car. The Christmas shuttles above leave from Colmar station and are paid for. The free shuttles advertised at Kaysersberg and Ribeauvillé serve park-and-ride sites on the village outskirts, at Bergheim in the case of Ribeauvillé: they are meant for visitors who arrived by car and pass no station. Reading one for the other leads you to believe a village is served on a Tuesday when it is not.

What the network does not cover

Three gaps remain, and they are what decides your mode of transport:

• From Monday to Thursday only line 3 runs. Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé are not served, even though Riquewihr is open every day.
• After 20 December the network stops, while Colmar, Eguisheim and Obernai stay open towards New Year.
• Departure is from Colmar. From Strasbourg you need a train first, adding about an hour and a half of return travel to the day.

The real problem is still the return

In December the sun sets around ten to five in Alsace. A market becomes interesting at exactly that moment, and village markets close between 6 and 7. The useful window is therefore short, and it coincides with the last departures. Check the time of the last return before you set out, not once you are there: many visitors leave the village at 4.30 so as not to miss their connection, and miss the one hour they came for.

Driver or shuttle: what actually compares

On price alone the shuttle wins, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise: 17 euros a head for a day of free movement sits below the cost of a whole vehicle. The choice therefore turns on other things:

• The days: the shuttle serves Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé only from Friday to Sunday. A midweek trip has no alternative.
• The return time: a driver collects you when the market closes, not when the line stops running.
• The starting point: the shuttle leaves from Colmar station, not from your hotel and not from Strasbourg.
• What the day contains: a cellar, a restaurant or a village outside the network cannot be added to a shuttle itinerary.
• The shopping: it stays in the boot between stops rather than on your lap.
