How can I visit the Alsace Wine Route without a car?

In brief

Yes, the Alsace Wine Route can be fully explored without driving. The most flexible option is a private chauffeur, optionally combined with the TER regional train, the Wine Route cycle path or a group tour depending on your pace.

The Alsace Wine Route stretches over 170 kilometres from Marlenheim to Thann and crosses 120 villages. On paper it is a drive. In practice, driving becomes a constraint as soon as wine tasting is on the agenda: parking in pedestrian villages, traffic around Colmar in peak season, mandatory sobriety. Four credible alternatives exist, each suited to a different kind of traveller.

1. Private chauffeur with dedicated vehicle

The most flexible option. You pick your stops, duration and starting point (hotel, Strasbourg-Entzheim airport, main train station), and the driver handles the rest. You taste freely, you return late if dinner runs long, you carry your wine purchases without worry, and the itinerary adapts in real time. For whom: couples, families, small groups up to 7 passengers in a van, business travellers, anniversaries. Indicative budget: from around EUR 320 for a four-hour half-day in sedan (1 to 3 passengers), up to EUR 900 for a full day in van (4 to 7 passengers).

2. TER regional train plus walking

The Strasbourg - Colmar - Mulhouse TER line serves Obernai, Barr, Dambach-la-Ville, Selestat, Colmar, Rouffach and Thann. From the station you walk, take a local bus or a taxi to reach the villages and wineries. Count 25 to 45 minutes by TER from Strasbourg, then 10 to 30 extra minutes to reach a historic centre. For whom: solo travellers, one-day trips, tight budgets. Limitations: no direct access to remote estates, rigid schedules, poor for carrying bottles.

3. Wine Route cycle path (EuroVelo 5)

The Veloroute du Vignoble runs from Marlenheim to Thann over about 140 kilometres on signposted cycle paths or quiet vineyard roads. It connects every major village. Electric bicycle rentals are widely available in Obernai, Ribeauville and Colmar. For whom: cycling enthusiasts, stays of 3 to 5 days, travellers who enjoy a slow pace. Limitations: physically demanding over several days, tastings must be kept moderate, luggage limited to essentials.

4. Organised group tours

Several Alsatian tour operators run half-day or full-day shared coach tours, typically with two or three wineries and one or two villages. Morning or afternoon departures from Strasbourg or Colmar. For whom: fast overview, limited budget, solo traveller without a car. Limitations: fixed itinerary, little time per winery, group size of 15 to 50 people.

Which option fits your profile?

Thirty-second recap.

  • Complete freedom, comfort, existing group: private chauffeur.
  • Tight budget, solo traveller, one-day sampler: group tour.
  • Slow pace and physical activity: electric bicycle.
  • One-day trip from Strasbourg, no group: TER plus walking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring bottles back without a car?

Yes. With a private chauffeur, the boot comfortably holds 6 to 12 cases of six bottles. On the train, a practical limit is about 12 bottles per passenger in a padded bag. On a bicycle, 2 to 6 bottles in reinforced panniers. Most wineries also ship within metropolitan France from 6 to 12 bottles.

How much does a private chauffeur cost for the Wine Route?

Approximately EUR 320 for a four-hour half-day in a sedan carrying 1 to 3 passengers. Up to EUR 900 for a full eight-hour day in a van carrying 4 to 7 passengers. The rate includes a vineyard-adapted kilometre allowance with no surcharge for stops at cellars or restaurants.

How long does it take to reach the Wine Route from Strasbourg?

Fifteen minutes by car to Marlenheim (northern start), 25 minutes to Obernai, 45 minutes to Ribeauville, one hour to Colmar. By TER: Obernai in 30 minutes, Selestat in 25 minutes, Colmar in 30 minutes on direct services.

Can the chauffeur also act as a guide?

Our drivers know the villages, the cellars and the restaurant addresses, and share that knowledge during the trip. For certified commentary on heritage sites, a licensed tour guide can be added to the private chauffeur. On request when booking.

How far in advance should I book?

Minimum lead time is 12 hours before departure. In peak season (April to October and the Christmas markets from late November to late December), 2 to 3 weeks of notice are recommended to secure a date and a vehicle.
