The Christmas fabric, unique in France
Every year since 1998 a designer creates a new textile pattern for the city. The fabric dresses the chalet roofs, the street decorations and the shop windows, giving the market a visual unity the others lack. It is sold by the metre for the duration of the market, and afterwards made into tablecloths, cushions or bags. The idea is not decorative by accident: in the 18th and 19th centuries Mulhouse was a European capital of fabric printing, and the museum devoted to it holds several million samples.
Ninety chalets on Place de la Reunion
The market occupies Place de la Reunion, at the foot of the Saint-Etienne temple and the old town hall with its painted facade. Ninety chalets host as many craftspeople and designers. The single flat square changes the visit compared with the vineyard villages: the walk is short and fully accessible in a wheelchair or with a pushchair, with no sloping cobbles and no one-way lanes.
The first to open in all of Alsace
Mulhouse opens on 20 November 2026, a week before Colmar and ten days before most vineyard villages, and closes on 27 December. It is therefore the only market available for a trip in the third week of November, when the rest of the region has yet to set anything up. Closed on 25 December, as everywhere else.
An urban register, and what that implies
Come knowing what you are coming for. Mulhouse offers neither the postcard setting of Riquewihr nor the density of Colmar. In return, crowds are far more bearable on a Saturday afternoon, food and lodging cost what they cost in a city rather than at a tourist site, and there is first-rate covered shelter in case of rain or hard frost, between the fabric printing museum, the Cite de l'Automobile and the Cite du Train.
Getting there and back
The station is in the city centre, about ten minutes on foot from Place de la Reunion, with direct links from Strasbourg, Colmar and Basel. Basel-Mulhouse airport is some twenty minutes away by road, which makes this the first market reachable on arrival by air. Mulhouse sits at the southern end of the Wine Route: allow fifty minutes to Colmar and its villages, so you can open a stay here and work north into the vineyard afterwards.
